CHIP’d is developing a patent pending technology to be embedded in sporting balls and equipment, beginning with golf balls, for real-time GPS tracking, 3D flight path and augmented reality, game analysis, and gamification. The Orange County-based company has assembled a team of the golf industry and wireless technology experts with experience in electrical engineering and manufacturing, the Internet of Things, and product design and development for technology companies including Apple. Having developed proof-of-concept hardware in a baseball-sized ball and a prototype iPhone application, the company is raising $1.2 million to miniaturize electronics for the golf ball, manufacture 5,000 prototype golf balls with the embedded electronics, and complete MVP software (web and mobile applications) ready to go to market. The business model is to sell or license the technology to OEM’s and provide the golfer/athlete with access to the web and mobile applications for a recurring monthly subscription.
